Barriers to Communication

There are numerous barriers to communication that occurs during the communication process. These may be due to misunderstandings and confusions which leads to distorted usages. Sometimes the usages are not conveyed correctly by the inter-mediatorSome of the barriers to communication are as under:


1.     Personal barrier
Some personal factors like difference in social values, inferiority complex, bias, attitude, pressure of time, inability to communicate, difference in judgement etc., widen the gap between communicator and the communicatee.

2.     Physical barriers
The distance between the sender and the recipient of the message is the crucial obstacle to message. Noise and environmental factors also block communication.



3.     Semantic/Language barriers
Semantic is the science of meanings. Sometimes problems occur when the sender and the receiver of the messages use words in different senses as same words have different meanings. The meaning followed by the recipient might be different from what sender wants to convey.

4.     Emotional barriers
Many people feel difficult to express their feelings or emotions in front of others.

5.     Organizational structure barriers
Information travelling through formal structure causes delay because long lines of communication. The breakdown or distortion in communication arises if the organizational structure is complex.

6.     Barriers due to inadequate attention
Inadequate attention arises due to the over business of the communicatee or because of the message being contrary to his expectation and beliefs. Inadequate attentions to the message leads to the misunderstanding of message.

7.     Status barriers
Status in the pyramid of an association is one of the major barriers that hinders the open flow of information. Sometime superior only gives certain information to his sub-ordinates so as to keep status variances.


8.     Premature evaluation
This type of evaluation distorts understanding and acts as a barrier to effective communication. This takes place due to the tendency of some people who form a judgement before listening to the entire message.

Above all we can say that there are many barriers to communication which leads to distorted messages and misunderstanding.
